Black Friday and Cyber Monday have both passed and I wonder what great genealogy gifts my family bought me this year. I have been exploring ChatGPT and I thought I would see what ChatGPT suggests. I wouldn't be disappointed with any of their suggestions.

Prompt: What gifts would you buy for a genealogist?

"Choosing a gift for a genealogist can be a thoughtful and meaningful process. Consider their interests, tools they might need, or items that enhance their research experience. Here are some gift ideas for a genealogist:

Ancestry DNA Kit: A DNA testing kit from companies like AncestryDNA or 23andMecan provide valuable insights into their genetic background and help them discover new relatives.

Genealogy Software: Gift them a subscription or software for managing their family tree, such as Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, or Family Tree Maker.

Books on Genealogy: Choose books written by well-known genealogists or ones that focus on specific research techniques and strategies.

Research Services: Hire a professional genealogist to help them break through a research brick wall or to assist in exploring a specific branch of their family tree.

Archival Supplies: Acid-free storage boxes, photo albums, and archival pens can help them preserve and organize their family documents and photographs.

Scanner or Photo Scanner: A high-quality scanner or photo scanner can be invaluable for digitizing old family photos and documents.

Subscription to Historical Records Archives: Provide access to online databases of historical records and newspapers, such as Newspapers.com, Fold3, or Archives.com.

Conference or Workshop Tickets: Purchase tickets to a genealogy conference or workshop where they can learn new techniques, network with other genealogists, and stay updated on the latest trends.

Customized Family Tree Chart: Commission a professional artist to create a beautiful and customized family tree chart that they can display.

DNA Testing Education: Consider a course or educational materials on how to interpret and utilize DNA test results for genealogical research.

Portable External Hard Drive: Genealogists often have a large collection of digital records. A portable hard drive can be useful for backing up and transporting data.

Gift Cards: If you're unsure about specific preferences, consider gift cards for genealogy websites, bookstores, or even general online retailers.

Digital Voice Recorder: Useful for recording oral histories or interviews with family members.

Customized Genealogy Jewelry: Personalized jewelry, such as a bracelet or necklace featuring the birthstones of their ancestors, can make for a unique and sentimental gift.

Research Trip Support: If they have plans for a genealogy research trip, consider contributing to travel expenses or providing a gift card for accommodations.

Remember to consider the individual preferences and needs of the genealogist you're buying for, and tailor your gift accordingly."

Fort Custer Friday: "On the Bookshelf: Navigating Fort Custer Library's Civil War Resources"

Camp Custer, later Fort Custer, was not in existence during the American Civil War, but the Fort Custer Historical Society library and archives has a few Civil War era resources. One of those resources includes a series of books titled, The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.

The multi-volume series contains the official records of the Union and Confederate armies. The official records were ordered to be published by Congress and printed between 1881 and 1901. This primary source material was written at the time of the Civil War. They include reports, correspondence, orders, and more from both the Union and Confederate sides.

The books are divided into four series:

    • Series I - Contains reports dealing with Union and Confederate Military Operations in addition to correspondence, orders and returns related to those operations.
    • Series II - Contains correspondence, orders, reports and returns related to prisoners of war, State and political prisoners.
    • Series III - Contains correspondence, orders, reports and returns of Union authorities that are not related to military operations and prisoners.
    • Series IV - Contains correspondence, orders, reports and returns of Confederate authorities that are not included in the previous series.
  • The Fort Custer library doesn't have a complete set of this resource. The highlighted volumes below are the ones that the library DOES NOT have. Online availability is found at Internet Archive.

If you have an interest in the Civil War and want to learn first hand accounts of this troubling time in U.S. History and get a you were there feeling, this is the resource for you.
